The image is derived from a film still of ‘Wedding Banquet’ (1993) by the director Ang Lee. It is one of the first films made with Chinese characters about a gay relationship as the main plot.
Adult, consensual and non-commercial homosexuality has been legal in the China since 1997. Homosexuality was removed from the Ministry of Health’s list of mental illnesses in 2001 and the public health campaign against AIDS-HIV pandemic does include education for men who have sex with men.
Despite the changes, no civil rights law exists to address discrimination or harassment on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. The media tends to censor even positive depictions of same-sex couples and households headed by same-sex couples are not permitted to adopt children and do not have the same privileges as heterosexual married couples.
